VNS – Vietnam Ship Services Company carries out turbocharger overhaul, repair and maintenance for main and auxiliary engines on vessels calling at ports and anchorages across Vietnam. Our engineers work on turbochargers from the major marine manufacturers, including ABB, MAN and Mitsubishi. Because our team works on board at the berth or at anchor, you can complete planned overhauls and urgent repairs within the vessel’s port stay.
A turbocharger in poor condition reduces scavenge air supply, raises exhaust temperatures and increases fuel consumption. In addition, a bearing or rotor failure can put the engine out of service. Therefore, regular inspection and overhaul at the maker’s recommended intervals keeps the engine running efficiently and helps you avoid costly breakdowns at sea.
Signs Your Turbocharger Needs Attention
These symptoms do not always mean the turbocharger is damaged. However, they are clear signs that your turbocharger needs an inspection:
- Rising exhaust gas temperatures or falling scavenge air pressure
- Compressor surging or unstable turbocharger speed
- Abnormal noise or vibration from the turbocharger
- Lubricating oil leakage or high oil consumption at the turbocharger
- Black smoke or loss of engine power under load
- Running hours approaching the manufacturer’s overhaul interval
Turbocharger Makes We Service
Our engineers service marine turbochargers from major manufacturers for both two-stroke main engines and four-stroke auxiliary engines.
| Maker | Coverage |
|---|---|
| ABB | ABB marine turbochargers, including the TPL, TPS, VTR and other series |
| MAN Energy Solutions | MAN marine turbochargers, including the TCA, TCR and other series |
| Mitsubishi Heavy Industries | Mitsubishi marine turbochargers, including the MET and other series |
| IHI | IHI marine turbochargers, including the RH and other series |
| Other makes | Other marine turbocharger makes, subject to confirmation |
Turbocharger Services We Provide
Routine Maintenance and Inspection
- Inspection of compressor wheel, turbine blades, nozzle ring, bearings and seals
- Cleaning of compressor and turbine side components, air filter and silencer
- Checking of bearing clearances, rotor axial play and lubricating oil supply
- Minor repairs and replacement of worn parts that our engineers find during inspection
Complete Turbocharger Overhaul
- Removal – First, our engineers remove the turbocharger or its rotating assembly from the engine according to the manufacturer’s procedures.
- Disassembly – Next, they separate the compressor housing, turbine housing, bearing housing and rotor, handling each component carefully to avoid damage.
- Cleaning – The team then cleans all components to remove carbon deposits, oil residue and other contaminants.
- Inspection and measurement – After cleaning, we check each part for cracks, erosion and wear. We also measure clearances against the manufacturer’s specified tolerances.
- Parts replacement – Based on the inspection results, we replace worn bearings, seals, O-rings, gaskets and any other damaged components as required.
- Reassembly – After replacing the necessary parts, our engineers reassemble the turbocharger in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, including the required clearances and torque settings.
- Reinstallation and running check – Finally, we refit the unit and check its operation during an engine run.
Rotor Balancing
Rotor imbalance causes vibration and, as a result, accelerates bearing wear. For this reason, we arrange dynamic balancing of the turbocharger rotor, including the turbine and compressor wheels, after repair or parts replacement.
Turbocharger Spare Parts Supply
We supply turbocharger spare parts such as bearings, seals, gaskets, nozzle rings and rotor components. We source parts to your specification, including genuine maker’s parts when you require them. In addition, our service team can bring the parts to the vessel at the berth or at anchorage.
Overhauls on Board, at Berth or at Anchorage
Our engineers carry out inspection, dismantling, cleaning, parts replacement, reassembly and reinstallation on board while the vessel is alongside or at anchor. However, some work needs workshop equipment, for example rotor balancing or component reconditioning. In that case, we take the parts ashore and return them to the ship once the work is finished. We also schedule the whole job around cargo operations and the vessel’s departure time.
Our team handles port formalities for boarding and for moving tools and parts, as described on our Pier and Afloat Ship Repair Services page.
What You Receive After the Work
On completion, we hand the turbocharger over to the Chief Engineer and issue a service report. The report records the findings, measurements, replaced parts and work carried out. As a result, you have clear records for planned maintenance and future overhaul planning. Throughout the job, our engineers follow the turbocharger maker’s instructions and clearances for the specific model.
