VNS – Vietnam Ship Services Company provides marine engine parts reconditioning for main and auxiliary engines on vessels calling at ports and anchorages across Vietnam. We restore components such as piston crowns and skirts, exhaust valves, cylinder covers, cylinder liners and crankshafts, subject to their condition and the maker’s requirements. Marine engine parts reconditioning offers an alternative to buying new spares and can reduce spare parts costs and delivery delays.
Our engineers collect the parts from the vessel and recondition them in the workshop. We then deliver them back to the ship according to the agreed schedule and the vessel’s port stay.
Marine Engine Parts Reconditioning Services
Piston Crowns and Piston Skirts
Piston crowns suffer from burning on the combustion surface and wear in the ring grooves. We first inspect the crown and assess the damage. Depending on its condition and the maker’s requirements, we restore suitable areas by weld build-up, heat treatment and machining. We also apply chrome plating where the design and repair specifications require it.
Piston skirts can become scored or worn from contact with the cylinder liner. We inspect and measure the skirt, then restore the worn surfaces by machining. Where the skirt has bronze wear bands, we renew them as required.
Exhaust Valve Spindles and Seats
Hot exhaust gas burns and corrodes the spindle disc and seat faces over time. Therefore, we restore the seating faces by weld build-up (hard-facing) where needed, then machine and grind the spindle and seat to the maker’s dimensions so that the valve seals correctly again. If a part is worn beyond the applicable repair limits, we advise replacement instead.
Crankshafts
Crankshaft journals and crankpins can become scored, oval or worn out of tolerance. We inspect the crankshaft and check it for cracks. Where the damage and the maker’s limits permit, we grind and polish the journals and crankpins to restore the required dimensions and surface finish.
Cylinder Covers and Cylinder Liners
We recondition cylinder covers, including the sealing faces and the bores for the exhaust valve, fuel valves and starting valve. Burnt or corroded areas can be restored by weld build-up and machining.
For cylinder liners, we carry out inspection and wear measurement, honing of the running surface and reconditioning of the landing and sealing surfaces. When liner wear exceeds the maker’s limits, we can supply a replacement liner instead.
Other Engine and Machinery Components
In addition, we recondition a wide range of other components, for example:
- Connecting rods and crossheads
- Fuel injection pumps and fuel valves
- Pump shafts, impellers and casings
- Propeller shafts and intermediate shafts
- Air compressor parts
- Bearing housings and other machined components
For any other part, please send us the part name, drawings or photos. We will then confirm the scope before the vessel arrives.
Our Marine Engine Parts Reconditioning Process
The exact process depends on the component and its condition. However, the following steps show our typical approach:
- Collection – Our engineer boards the vessel and confirms with the ship’s officers which parts need reconditioning.
- Transport to workshop – We take the parts ashore to our workshop.
- Cleaning and visual inspection – The team then cleans each part and inspects the working surfaces.
- Crack detection – Next, we carry out dye penetrant testing to find surface cracks and defects.
- Measurement – We measure and record the dimensions so that we can compare them after the repair.
- Restoration – Depending on the part, we restore the worn surfaces by weld build-up with suitable consumables, heat treatment and machining to the maker’s specifications.
- Surface treatment – Where required, we apply chrome plating to the restored surfaces.
- Final measurement – We measure the part again and compare the results with the original figures.
- Return to the vessel – Finally, we deliver the parts back on board and hand them over to the ship’s officers.
What You Receive After the Work
Together with the reconditioned parts, we provide reports for your records:
- Work List Report – the scope of work carried out on each part
- Work Photo Report – photos of the part before, during and after reconditioning
- Workshop Fabrication Report – measurements, findings and the repair methods used
These reports support your planned maintenance records. You can also present them to the attending surveyor of the vessel’s classification society when required. Class acceptance of the repair remains the surveyor’s decision.
