VNS – Vietnam Ship Services Company provides marine NDT services for vessels calling at ports and anchorages across Vietnam. Our certified NDT technicians inspect welds, steel structures, machinery components and cargo gear without damaging them. As a result, you can confirm the condition of a part, verify a repair or plan steel renewal while the vessel remains in port.
We carry out non-destructive testing on board at the berth or at anchor, often during the same port call as other repair work. In addition, we can test components in our workshop before or after reconditioning.
Marine NDT Services We Provide
Visual Inspection
Visual inspection is the first step of every NDT job. Our technicians examine the surface for cracks, corrosion, deformation and weld defects. They then decide which further test methods are needed.
Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
Dye penetrant testing finds surface-breaking cracks and porosity. We apply a penetrant to the cleaned surface, remove the excess and then apply a developer, which draws the penetrant out of any defect. Because PT works on most non-porous materials, we use it on welds, engine parts such as piston crowns and exhaust valves, and non-magnetic components.
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
Magnetic particle testing detects surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic steel. We magnetise the area and apply fine magnetic particles, which gather at any crack and make it visible. For this reason, MT is well suited to welds, crane hooks, shackles, shafts and other steel components.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Ultrasonic testing uses high-frequency sound waves to find internal defects such as cracks, lack of fusion and inclusions. It also shows the depth and size of a defect. Therefore, we use UT for butt welds, thick steel sections and critical structural joints.
Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement
We measure the remaining thickness of hull plating, decks, bulkheads, tank structures, pipes and cargo hold steel with ultrasonic thickness gauges. The results show where corrosion has reduced the steel thickness. As a result, you can plan steel renewal and repair scope before the vessel arrives at the next repair yard or drydock.
For thickness measurements required for class surveys, VNS coordinates with a thickness measurement firm approved by the relevant classification society. The firm prepares the measurement report for review by the attending surveyor.
Where We Apply Marine NDT
- Weld inspection after repair – checking welds on renewed steel plates, frames, pipes and fittings before the work is handed over
- Hull and structure – crack detection and thickness measurement on hull plating, hatch covers, cargo holds and tanks
- Cargo gear and lifting equipment – crane hooks, sheaves, pedestals, booms and lashing fittings
- Engine and machinery parts – piston crowns, exhaust valves, crankshafts, shafts and other components during marine engine parts reconditioning
- Pre-purchase and condition checks – assessing specific areas of concern on request
How We Carry Out Marine NDT Services
- Scope review – You send us the areas or components to be tested, drawings and any class or surveyor requirements.
- Planning – We confirm the test methods, access needs and schedule around cargo operations and the vessel’s port stay.
- Surface preparation – Our team cleans the test areas so that the results are reliable.
- Testing – Our certified technicians carry out the agreed tests and record each finding.
- Reporting – We issue an NDT report with the test methods, locations, findings and photos.
Where the work relates to a class item, we coordinate with the attending surveyor of the vessel’s classification society. However, acceptance of the results remains the surveyor’s decision.
What You Receive After the Work
After testing, we provide an NDT report for your records. The report includes the areas tested, the methods used, the findings and photos. For thickness measurement, it also lists the measured values at each location. You can use the report for planned maintenance, repair planning or presentation to the surveyor.
